Media Trust At An All-Time Low

According to recent opinion polls people are growing more distrustful of the information they recieve from mass media. Media trust has just hit a new all time low. For the first time ever less than half of all Americans trust traditional media to report the news fully, acurately, and fairly. posted information about the growing media distrust on their twitter page @Disclosetv.

Just 46 percent of all Americans have trust in mass media. Axios reported the data from Edelman’s annual trust barometer showing that 56 percent of Americans agree “Journalists and reporters are purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations”. The Edelman report revealed that trust in social media has hit an all-time low of 27 percent. After the recent presidential election, the figures had deteriorated even further according to the Axios news report.

Gallup’s annual governance poll conducted in the third quarter of 2020 showed that 60 percent of the U.S have not very much or no trust at all in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately and fairly. The Gallop poll showed that nearly one third of the U.S. or 33 percent have “none at all”. Republican mistrust is a main reason for the 10-point jump in American distrust according to Gallop. Now at 58% it is the “first-ever majority-level reading”. This is the widest gap in trust between Democrats and Republicans that Gallup has recorded.

Americans are relying heavily on the media for information about the coronavirus (COVID-19), government operations, economic indicators, financial conditions, and other significant events. The Gallop/Knight Foundation poll found that “although Americans increasingly see bias in news coverage, they nonetheless believe that an independent media is key to democracy”.
