The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) and Tarran County Food Bank distributed more than 500,000 pounds of food on Saturday. Cars lined the freeway headed for the and drive-thru food pantry. CBS News reports that Mitchell Ward, CEO of MW Logistics was the “brainchild” of MTFB’s largest food give away ever. An estimated 6,000 cars and 25,000 people were served. Many people are seeking g food assistance for the first time with at least 40 percent “coming through the doors new to them and due to COVID” said Anna Kurian, NTFB Senior Director of Marketing and Communications.
Communities across the US are lined up at food pantries. Food insecurity has doubled in the US since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It has tripled for families with children according to the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) at Northwestern University, citing data from the US Census Bureau. As COVID-19 infection rates rise and economic instability increases more people are expected to become unemployed. Disruptions in food production and food insecurity in the US is expected to grow.
