Cuba Administers COVID-19 Immune System Boosting Drug To Travelers

Cuba has began administering an immune system booster produced by the country’s biotechnology industry to “prevent the transmission of SARS-COV-2”. According to a recent article in FinalCall com, Nasalferon is being administered to travelers and their families. As a preventative measure to combat coronavirus (COVID-19) travelers arriving in Cuba and members of their households are administered the medication. “Co-habitants must begin treatment three days before the arrival of the traveler,” said Ileana Morales, Director of Science and Technological Innovation at the Ministry of Public Health”.

Nasalferon is administered through nasal drops according to the article. The medication regimen requires that one drop be “administered nasally in the morning, and another at night, for a period of five to 10 days” explained Ileana Morales. The drug works by strengthening the immune system, explained the Cuban News Agency. Specialists are confident Nasalferon “disrupts reproduction of the virus and impacts the extent of colonies present in the body.”

According ti the Academy of Sciences of Cuba,”Nasalferon is a formulation of recombinant IFN-alpha-2b-human for nasal administration that, thanks to the immune-modulating and antiviral properties of IFN-alpha, provides protection against the virus.” A recent session of Havana’s Provincial Defense Council reported that the medication would be dispensed in the municipalities of Boyeros and Diez de Octubre, first. Then it would be given to the rest of the capital. If a person is infected with COVID-19 and take Nasalferon, they won’t experience severe symptoms, say experts according to the article.

Data from the Academy of Sciences of Cuba show that “through August, 17,241 health workers and 1,105 at-risk individuals had been treated with the drug.” Cuba is under current U.S. sanctions and have been working cooperatively with Iran to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
